35k lost in 2 yrs as No Limit Holdem Player.

I live in sacramento, ca.  I make 56k a year as a electrician at Post Office.  I felt that i was born to be a known personality.  Through my hard work, deciation, lots and lots of hours of studying, making notes and gaining 100 of hours of experience on poker table, i will become on of the best poker players who ever came around.  But i forgot, its game of odds.  but on best day, those odds are only for books.  If odds held up every time or most of the time. i would not be 35k in hole. Some famous personality once said," In texas holdem, 80% must lose, so few could win."  Well i guess that applies to tournament play.  But in cash game, to make living you have to dedicate anywhere 10-14 hours a day to make good living, but on one play when odds dont stand up, you end up losing what you have earned that day and you are back to square one. 14 hours of life wasted.  No time for Wife, Kids, Malls, Shopping, Friends, Numberous other things because you have to make living playing poker.  But why put all this hardwork, dedication and studying when there is only 50% gurantee, that your hard work would pay off.  Cash games could really suck your pesonal life into a black hole.  I have decided to find a second job to make my loses back and quit gambling Poker.  I am willing to punish my self by working two jobs to make my loses back.  Anyways i hope this site is a positive step in right direction.  THANK YOU for listening.

I've been there, Brother.

I've been there, Brother. I've tried playing tight-aggressive, loose-passive, tight -passive and whatever style that's out there. Nothing works. If the cards aren't there, you just ain't gonna make it.

It's a big business and the only ones making money are the physical and online casinos. It's human nature to think that if you can win $40, why not $100, if $100 why not $400. That's why people can never win enough or lose enough.

It's a bad habit/vice. I'd rather work for my money.

Things will get better if

Things will get better if you focus one day at a time. Set a structure and routine for your life and things will gradually improve.

Hang in there.

35K lets see why????

First of all a few questions
1. What limits did u play at?
2. What size bankroll did u use?
3. What sites did u play or casinos?

Some answers

1."I felt that I was born to be a known personality."-don't we all but this has nothing to do with winning and a lot to do with losing.
2. "But i forgot, its game of odds. but on best day, those odds are only for books. If odds held up every time or most of the time. i would not be 35k in hole."- Poker is a game of odds but not totally. I will state this as a bold fact to you. You are 35k in the hole based upon the decisions you made in each and every hand u played. Your results in poker over the long run are a direct result of the decision you make it has nothing to do with your hand losing to an inferior hand.
3."No time for Wife, Kids, Malls, Shopping, Friends, Numberous other things because you have to make living playing poker."-Above u stated "I make 56k a year as a electrician at Post Office."-So when did poker a game you were losing money at become how u made your living when you make 56K a year? In poker as well as anything you must balance your life. You must make time for those you love just as you did before poker. There is a HUGE difference between playing part time where u have a job and playing for a living. Honestly did you ever make a living playing poker?- If so how much did u make a Week?/Month?/Year?
4."But why put all this hardwork, dedication and studying when there is only 50% gurantee, that your hard work would pay off."- Far less than 50% of people who play poker are winners and of those who do win it is not as large a sum of money as most would like.
5."I am willing to punish my self by working two jobs to make my loses back."- this is awesome and is exactly what you should do treat poker as a hobby not a lifestyle or a facade you must keep up.

Don't matter what strategy

Don't matter what strategy you use, the size of your bankroll, where you play, IF THE CARDS AREN'T THERE, YOU'RE SHIT OUT OF LUCK. IT DOESN'T MATTER how smart you are. You can't control what cards you'll get.

There were times when I went in and won $100 in two hands and it sometimes took me 8 hours to make $100. There were times when I lost $100 in one hand and there were times I lost $100 in 20 hours.

I had no control over what card I got. As for bluffing? Someone always catches you.

It's a sad life, trying to make people's money without giving them something beneficial in return.

i feel your pain

one thing i have found that helps is to find something else you can like to do that will effect you in a positive way. i have begun working out. it is a new passion for me. learning something new, and making myself better mentally and physically . whenever i want to gamble, i think of working out now. you can even use it for punishment! for every gambling thought you have, drop down and do 20 pushups!!! good luck to you. stay strong. Every day ends how we choose it to.
